Organic Home Garden Potatoes

Organic Home Garden plan with containers is very easy to manage.

If you are planning a small home landscape, you may consider a little kitchen garden to grow your fresh; and delicious vegetables for your every day's meal.

The potato is a tuberous-rooted perennial, so you can plant them continuously if you have spare rooms.

Growing disease resistance variety will save you plenty of time; and help you to minimise your vegetables gardening problems.

Before you purchase any organic seed potatoes from the store, you may have to consider a few things, such as:

  • your time schedule;

  • your favourite types of potatoes;

  • the growing space;

  • the harvesting time;

  • the self sufficient volume of production.

         How to Select Seeds

* Usually the new seed potatoes will arrive in the gardening shops around late winter to early Spring.

* Select those types of seeds that held minimum one eye. Eyes are buds; you need the buds to sprout; therefore the more eyes the seed contains; the more strong roots it may produce; and the more tubers you will be receiving; if it is healthy.

    How to Sprout Potatoes

  • If you are living in a mild and non-freezing winter area, you can start sprouting your organic seed potatoes in the dark as early as in the Autumn.

    Potatoes tubers preferred to be sprouted in a slightly cool temperature than hot.

  • You may sprout potatoes in a different way by filling up a few inches of soil in a container and place one tuber in the centre, then cover with some loose soil.

  • When under the suitable warm, the young growths would push through the soil within a few days.

How to Manage the Young Shoots

A gentle watering may be given; earth-up when the shoots grow taller; take care that the young shoots will not be getting dry; sprinkle very little water everyday, as the evaporation is not great during the winter months and early spring; feed more water when the sun is going stronger.

Last year I thought of getting one kilo (1000g) of seed potatoes. However, my husband brought 2000 grams home. So, I had no choice, I inserted them everywhere around the vegetable raised bed. We had only harvested 10 kilo's of potatoes. It was a total waste!

This year we bought only half, but still excessive. We had harvested ten kilo's of potatoes from one kilo of baby potatoes. The produce should be more if I had enough space for them.

Organic Home Garden Edible Plan

You can grow potatoes in any types of containers, pots, barrels and large bags or plant it directly in the open ground plot.

Growing potatoes in containers is easy and quick. We have "Eigenheimers" Dutch potatoes every year, because we simply love the excellent sweet and floury flavour.

Our winter days are really freezing cold, however, I could not wait to start growing them once I got the seeds in hand. This year we had planted them very early in late winter without sprouting; some were grown in the pots and others were grown in the small grow bed.

"Eigenheimers" potato is a second early variety. It is disease resistance and it often took about 3 months to harvest.

                          Container
A re-usable 32 cm or 12.5 inch (Height) x 87 cm or 34 inch (Diameter) no hole round container is used to grow these potatoes every year.

                    How to Prepare the Soil
You can fill a mix of ordinary potting soil and rich organic soil. And add about ten earth worms into the container. They would helped you to generate the organic fertilizer and enriched your soil.

                      When to Feed Water
You can feed a good water everyday, when the soil is too dry due to the extremely strong sunlight. You can also sprinkle on and off natural chlorine free mineral water and rain water mix.

Guide them with bamboo sticks so that they will stand straight. Imagine, they were more than 90 cm (about 3 feet) tall and standing in a 70 litres of solid black ground container.

Organic Home Garden Using No Dig and No Till Concepts

During the growth, cover the tubers with soil once it appear on the surface of the ground. The potatoes would turn green when they expose to the light.

              Green potatoes are not edible!

If you prefer to eat young potatoes, harvest them immediately when the flowers fall off. If you prefer larger sized of tubers, harvest them after the plant turned yellow and died down; and when they have completed their growing cycle.

Organic Home Garden Root Vegetables Harvest

Some people said cover the potatoes with 5 cm (about 2 inches) of fine soil after harvest, tubers will bear a second crop. I truly believed it; after I have done a few container water potatoes experiments.

We buy no more seeds in the coming spring as we had enough from this harvest.
