Before you purchase any organic seed potatoes from the store, you may have to consider a few things: such as your favourite types of potatoes; the growing space; the harvesting time; and the self sufficient volume of production.
Usually the new seed potatoes will arrive in the gardening shops around late winter to early Spring.
Select those types of seed potatoes that has minimum one eye. Eyes are buds; we need the buds to sprout.
If you are living in a mild and non-freezing winter area, you can start sprouting your seed potatoes in the dark as early as in the Autumn. Potatoes tubers love to be sprouted in a slightly cool temperature than hot.
You may sprout potatoes in a different way by filling up a few inches of soil in a container and place one tuber in the centre, and cover with some loose soil.
When under the suitable warm, the young growths will push through the soil within a few days. A gentle watering may be given; earth-up when the shoots grow taller; take care that the young shoots will not be getting dry; sprinkle very little water everyday, as the evaporation is not great during the winter months and early spring; feed more water when the sun is going stronger.

Last year I thought of getting one kilo of seed potatoes. However, my husband brought 2000 grams home. So, I had no choice, I inserted them everywhere around the vegetable raised bed. We had only harvested 10 kilo's of potatoes. It was a total waste!
This year we bought only half, but still excessive. We had harvested ten kilo's of potatoes from one kilo of seed potatoes. The produce should be more if I had enough space for them.

You can grow potatoes in any types of containers, pots, barrels and large bags or planting potatoes directly in the open ground plot.
Growing potatoes in containers is easy and fast! We have "Eigenheimers" Dutch potatoes every year, because we simply love the excellent sweet and floury flavour.
Our winter days are really freezing cold, however, I could not wait to start growing them once I got the seeds in hand. This year we had planted them very early in late winter without sprouting; some were grown in the containers and others were grown in the small growing bed.
"Eigenheimers" potato is a second early variety. It is disease resistance and it has taken about 100 days to harvest.

We use a 32 cm or 12.5 inch (Height) x 87 cm or 34 inch (Diameter) no hole round container to grow our potatoes every year!
We filled a mix of ordinary potting soil and rich organic soil; We added about ten earth worms into the container. They helped us to generate the organic garden fertilizer and enriched our soil.
We feed quite a good water everyday, because the soil was too dry due to the extremely strong sunlight. We sprinkled on and off natural chlorine free mineral water and rain water mix.
Guide them with bamboo sticks so that they will stand straight.
Imagine, they were more than 90 cm (about 3 feet) tall. They were standing in a 70 litres of solid black ground container!
