Building Backyard Ponds with DIY Small Fish Pond Makeovers!

Building backyard ponds underground is not difficult!

My husband is not satisfied with the earlier pond designs and the pond size. He realised that, the first pond was too small and totally out of place. So, he had built the second goldfish pond.

During the past winter season, he finally realised that, he had taken too much of our garden space; he felt that, the pond had slightly over ruled the backyard landscape design. He learned about "Balance" and "Harmony"!

Yes, he could not wait for the winter to be over; he built again; the third goldfish pond to the size of 555cm or 18.2 feet(L) x 115cm or 3.7 feet(W) x 16cm or 6 inch(H).

Our materials are 12 pieces of wood from 180cm or 5.9 feet(L) x 7cm or 2.75 inch(H) x 7cm(W) for the length of the pond, and 4 pieces of 115cm or 3.7 feet(L) x 2cm or 0.75 inch(H) x 14.5 cm or 5.7 inch(W) for the width.

Are you wondering why the fish pond is in such an odd size?

The size of the pond is measured according to the maximum length of our garden. The size of the wood materials we used are always 180cm in length: This size is easy to handle, easy for transportation, and it can easily be re-used for building greenhouses, flower containers, borders of the garden, compost pile, or any other accessories when we need it.

He dug a depth of 60cm (2 feet), 2 x 45cm (0.75 x 1.5 feet), and 2x 35cm (0.75 x 1 feet) holes. We planned to grow two water lily plants organically at the bottom of both 45cm deep water.

Imagine, such a cold weather; and the space is so narrow; it would not be easy to do such a pond construction; however, he could managed it.

He did it very slowly as the temperature was still chilling; and the ground was muddy. He took intervals when the ground was too wet. He removed the old pond part by part on the second day.

First he completed the entire length of the two sides (they look a little like our raised beds). Then followed by the liners; and last filling-up water.

The gold fishes were kept in an aquarium indoors during the cold season all these years. Last year they stayed outdoor for the first time and they experienced a long hard freezing white winter days.

We kept an eye always on them, because it was their first time, and we discovered that they were staying at the 35cm or 13.7 inch depth of water all the time, regardless of the extreme changes of temperature. In another words, they do not need a deeper place to hide themselves; when the heavy snow arrives.

Before laying the garden pond liners, you must make sure that, there are no stones left on the surface of the ground. Because the stones will damage the liners.

This time we laid one piece of the Recyclable Polyethylene Screen (our greenhouse material) under the liner; to block the weeds; because we discovered some weed plants were grown under the liner in the earlier pond; even though they were not exposed to the light.

When the pond is filled with water, let the backyard pond liners stretch naturally to fit the shape of the pond.

We have used up one piece of 8 x 3 meters (about 26 x 10 feet) new black PVC pond liner for this project Three.
